Bengal Civic Poll: Opposition alleges rigging, TMC got more than 90% votes in some areas

The Bhatpara Municipal Corporation election results fall in the field of influential Bharatiya Janata Party MP Arjun Singh. An analysis of results obtained from Election Commission sources shows that five out of 35 wards are where the vote share of West Bengal’s ruling Trinamool Congress has reached nearly 95%. In some wards, the BJP and the Left got the maximum 12 per cent votes. Overall, TMC has got 79% votes in this municipality and BJP has got around 10% votes. The Left has got around 9% of the vote.

This is not the case only in Bhatpara; There are also some other municipalities where the situation is similar. After his resounding victory in the West Bengal Assembly elections as well as a series of by-elections last year, TMC It won 102 out of 108 municipalities in the state civic polls on Wednesday. It also secured the Kanthi municipality, which falls in the area of Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition and BJP MLA from Nandigram. BJP and Congress could not win even a single civic body.

This is Bolpur constituency data from Election Commission sources. Here too, in five places, the ruling party has got more than 90 percent votes. Overall, TMC has got more than 90% votes in Bolpur. Many wards here went unopposed.

This type of voting pattern has been observed in various municipalities, and the opposition, which has been questioning since election day, has become more vocal in its allegations of widespread rigging.

Political analyst Vishwanath Chakraborty told News18, “This extraordinary data clearly proves that huge malpractices have taken place. In these civic polls, you will hardly find a booth where the ruling party cadre has not committed malpractice… In Bengal, malpractice has now become the norm. It is dangerous for the country.”

Opposition says rigging theory was put forward by TMC once when Left was in power Bengal, At the time it was called “scientific rigging”. Now the same thing is being alleged by the rivals of TMC.

BJP MP Arjun Singh told News18, “The police have done everything. They have taken the candidates to the police station. They have allowed rigging and everything. I wonder why it stopped at 90%. He should get more than 110% votes.”

The opposition is linking it to the 2018 panchayat elections, when similar allegations surfaced. The same will happen in next year’s panchayat elections, say the parties.

However, the ruling Trinamool Congress has a different stand. TMC MP and spokesperson Mahua Moitra said, ‘What can be done if people voted for TMC? For example in Krishnanagar in 2019 we were ahead in only one ward. In 2021 we were ahead in two wards. In these civic polls, we won all the 16 wards. So what can be done if they vote for us?”
