Bengal bypolls: Congress’s choice from Samserganj wants to walk out to avoid a feud with Judwaa, a TMC MP

The spotlight for the West Bengal Assembly by-elections on September 30 has been fixed on Bhabnipur seat, where the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is a competitor. But in the Samserganj constituency of Murshidabad district, voting will also take place, a strange situation has come to the fore. One of the candidates here is Congress’s Zaidur Rehman, who got the ticket during the assembly elections this year after party candidate Rezaul Haque died of Kovid and the election was postponed. But, unlike other candidates, Zaidur has no campaign schedule, no strategy meeting and not too many worries. Because, while he has submitted his nomination, he does not want to contest.

After Rejaul’s death, Congress initially asked his wife to contest from this seat, but she refused. Then a local businessman and popular face Jaidur was approached and he agreed. However, now he has had a change of heart. And his twin brother might have something to do with it.

While talking to News18, Zaidur said, “Look, at that time people asked me to contest elections and Congress gave me ticket. So I was interested. My twin brother, Khalilur Rehman, is a Trinamool Congress MP from Jangipur and is now in charge of the entire region. He is two minutes older than me. If I contest elections there will be problem in the house and I don’t want that.

This has put the Congress in trouble as it can no longer change its candidate. The party is still trying to persuade Jaidur to fight.

Congress block president Saidul Islam told News18, “He is of two minds. We are asking him to contest elections. The decision will come in a day or two. Meanwhile, we are asking our workers to put the Congress symbol on the walls of the area and do normal work. There is Congress support. What will Congress voters do?”

Analysts say it will be interesting to see where the Congress vote goes if Zaidur backs out.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Malda Congress candidate Abu Hasim Khan Choudhary got the lead from Samserganj.

Trinamool Congress MLA Amirul Islam is contesting from this seat and CPI(M) has also fielded its candidate. In the 2016 assembly elections, Amirul won the seat with 48,381 (30.41%) votes. Tauab Ali of CPI(M) did not lag behind with 46,601 (29.31%) votes. Rezaul Haque of Congress got 42,389 (26.66%) votes.

By-elections will be held in Bhabnipur, Samserganj and Jangipur on 30 September and the results will be declared on 3 October.
