Bengal: Belur Math closed indefinitely as Covid cases rise in the state

Kolkata: With the rise of Covid-19 cases in the state, the West Bengal government has imposed restrictions across the state to contain the spread of the virus. It said that on Sundays all schools and other educational institutions, salons, beauty parlors, spas, zoos and amusement parks will remain closed from Monday, January 3.

Accordingly, some religious places in the state have also closed the premises for devotees and visitors indefinitely.

Belur Math, the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Mission, has said that it will remain closed for visitors. until further notice,

As per the earlier announcement, the monastery was to remain closed from January 1 to January 4. This time, in compliance with the guidelines issued by the state government, the Belur Math has banned the entry for devotees and visitors indefinitely.

Other temples may also be closed

Not only Belur Math, but many other temples and shrines in the state can also be closed for devotees and visitors.

Media reports said that on Sunday, Tarapith temple officials said they would hold a meeting soon to take a final decision on it.

The Dakshineswar Kali temple remained closed on the day of the annual Kalpataru festival, which is celebrated on the first day of January every year.

Meanwhile, the Botanical Garden in Kolkata has also decided to close due to the COVID situation, it said in a notification issued on Monday.

Briefing the media on Sunday, West Bengal Chief Secretary HK Dwivedi said: “All schools, colleges, universities, spas, salons, beauty parlors, zoos and amusement parks will remain closed in the state from tomorrow.”

The government also directed all government and private offices to function at 50 per cent capacity.

Dwivedi said that all administrative meetings will be held in virtual mode.

The government also said that flights from Delhi and Mumbai to West Bengal will operate only twice a week from January 5.

Meanwhile, local trains will run at 50 per cent capacity, and the service will stop every day after 7 pm. Metro rail will also operate with 50 per cent passengers, and so will restaurants and bars as per government instructions. Cinema halls have also been asked to operate with 50 per cent seats and they will have to be closed after 10 pm.
