Ben Stokes hit the 108th six of his career, surpassing England coach Brendon McCullum to become the record holder for most sixes in Test cricket.

England captain Ben Stokes on Saturday surpassed his coach Brendon McCullum to hit the most sixes in Test cricket.

Stokes hit his 108th career six when he hooked fast bowler Scott Kuggeleijn over fine leg on the third day of the first Test against New Zealand at Mount Maunganui.

The 31-year-old all-rounder immediately pointed towards the dressing room, where McCullum was applauding.

Stokes hit 109 sixes off the next delivery when he was relieved by boundary fielder Neil Wagner, who caught the shot but was over-balanced and put his foot on the rope.

Stokes was dismissed for 31 shortly afterwards, leaving England at 293–7 in their second innings with a total lead of 312 runs.

He took 90 Tests and 164 innings to reach his sixes, while McCullum’s 107 came in 176 innings of 101 Tests.

Stokes looks set to hold the record for some time.

The active player closest to his mark is veteran New Zealand skipper Tim Southee, who hit 76 sixes.
