The stage is set for the Tokyo Olympics, the 32nd edition of the Olympic Games, after a gap of a year due to the coronavirus pandemic. The quadrilateral begins on 23 July and lasts till 8 August. The opening ceremony is scheduled to take place on July 23, however, a few days before some events such as baseball, softball and football are scheduled to begin on July 21. . This year, the Games will feature 339 events in 33 sports.

Sports have always been an integral part of movies, be it Hollywood or Bollywood. Here we take a look at five films surrounding the lives of athletes:

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag

The 2013 film Bhaag Milkha Bhaag is based on the life of legendary Indian sprinter Milkha Singh. Also known as ‘The Flying Sikh’, he was the first Indian athlete to win an individual athletics gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. He won the yellow metal in the 400 meters in 1958. Milkha became a superstar after finishing fourth in the 440m at the 1960 Olympic Games.

Chariots of Fire is counted among the best films of all time, not just the best athletics film. The film was released in 1981. The film revolves around the story of two British athletes: Eric Liddell and Harold Abraham in the 1924 Olympics. Liddell is a staunch Scottish Christian, while Harold Abraham is an English Jew.

The 2014 American war film Unbroken is produced and directed by Angelina Jolie. It is based on a non-fiction book by Laura Hillenbrand published in 2010. The film revolves around the story of USA Olympian and Army officer, Louis Zamperini.

Paan Singh Tomar

The film is based on the true story of a runner hired by the army. Tomar won the gold medal in the Indian National Games. However, later he was forced to become the infamous ‘Baghi’. The film is directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia and was released in 2012.

Terry Fox Story

The film ‘The Terry Fox Story’ is based on the life of Terry Fox. The film was released in 1983 and depicts the struggle of a hero with cancer, who decides to run across Canada on only one leg to raise funds for cancer research.
