BCCI looking to rope in multiple broadcasters in new rights deal for IPL: Reports

Less than a month is left for the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League. This season two new teams will take part in the Mega T20 league which is to be played in Mumbai and Pune. Last month, in two days all the 10 franchises gathered in Bengaluru to form their teams in the mega auction and a few days back, the schedule was announced and the tournament is all set to begin from March 26 and end on May 29. A total of 70 league matches will be played in this season along with playoffs. So, now the only thing left that hasn’t been completed is a media rights deal for the next five-year cycle starting in 2023.

according to this cricbuzzThe Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been given a suggestion for a new media rights deal by considering several broadcasters. “The new media rights tender for IPL may have a collection of bundles that will ensure participation of multiple broadcasters. This is clearly a suggestion given to the BCCI. We will have to wait for the ITT (Invitation for Tender) document to see if it is implemented,” a top executive of a media selling company was quoted by the publication.

The report further said that the tender will go out within the next fifteen days and the board is planning to create a non-exclusive category. The move would allow more than one television station to broadcast the games simultaneously.

If it materialises, the deal could push estimated revenues above Rs 30,000 crore, with the likes of Star, Sony, Amazon and Reliance enjoying a lion’s share in the Indian Premier League.

Another feature of rights the BCCI is considering would be the separation between television and digital rights. Currently, they are looking to do away with the composite bids. The overall bids are a jumbo offer to suit all the packages with a huge amount. Star had last acquired the media rights by bidding for Rs 16,347 crore.

Also, to make the deal sweeter for broadcasters, the board is believed to be planning to increase the strategic timeout period from the current 150 seconds to three minutes.
