The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Thursday, June 22, invited applications for the post of selector for the men’s national team. There is a vacancy in the selection committee after Chetan Sharma was dropped in February this year. BCCI also disclosed the criteria and responsibilities of the interested candidates along with the job opening post on its official website.

The current selection committee consisted of Subroto Banerjee, Salil Ankola, Sreedharan Sharath and Shiv Sunder Das, since Chetan Sharma, who was the interim chairman. Now the BCCI is mulling over Sharma’s replacement and has set June 30 as the deadline for the submission of applications.

As per BCCI rules, a candidate must have played at least seven Test matches or 30 first-class matches, 10 ODIs and 20 first-class matches. The criteria also require that the candidate must have been retired from cricket for at least five years before applying. Also, as per the Memorandum of Association and Rules and Regulations of BCCI, the candidate should not have been a part of any cricket committee for the last five years.

The BCCI also revealed that the objective of the candidate’s role would be to select the senior national team for Tests, ODIs, T20Is and any other format. Shortlisted applicants will be called for personal interview for evaluation.

Earlier today, reports emerged of Virender Sehwag being the frontrunner to be the chairman of the national team selection committee. With the dismissal of Chetan Sharma, the place of the North Zone selector has become vacant. Sehwag fulfills all the criteria issued by the BCCI but he is reportedly looking for better remuneration for the post.

The next task for the current selection committee is to announce the squad for India’s multi-format tour of the West Indies, starting July 12. After India’s massive defeat against Australia in the WTC final 2023, all eyes will be on the selection committee, which is expected to make some major changes to the red-ball squad.
