Barely half the vows from BJP’s 2017 Goa manifesto met | Goa News – Times of India

PANAJI: Blame it on the pandemic or lack of funds due to non-resumption of mining in Goa, but barely 50% of the assurances made on the BJP manifesto for Goa in 2017 have seen implementation, even as the party released its manifesto for the February 14 assembly elections on Tuesday.
From employment generation for youth to making Goa garbage-free and 24×7 water supply, the manifesto had promised a transformation. But many such major needs remained unfulfilled.
Before going to polls in 2017, BJP had said that derived employment for youth will be its priority. Industries and IT, tourism and agro-based sectors would be expanded to create jobs, the party had assured. However, unemployment is the major issue facing the state in every constituency.
Neither could mining operations resume in a ‘sustainable’ manner, nor did the IT park/electronic cities planned in Tuem, Chimbel and Verna take off.
One of the promises met was distribution of funds under the CM Rojgar Yojana to individual entrepreneurs.
“Phase out use of plastic in all designated tourist spots to make Goa plastic free. Tourism sector to be given industry status and benefits. Improve connectivity to popular tourist spots with a better public transport system. WiFi enabled zones at major tourist destinations,” said the 2017 manifesto about the tourism sector, where little progress was achieved.
While the National Institute of Technology, Goa, received land for its permanent campus, meeting one assurance, the Indian Institute of Technology, Goa, is still waiting its turn to be handed land. Integrated education complexes to decongest the town areas of Margao, Vasco, Ponda and Mapusa are still awaited.
However, with funds pumped in by the Centre, one sector in which the BJP government in Goa could make significant progress is highway improvement. While the Mandovi, Talpona-Galgibaga, and Mala bridges are ready, the Khandepar bridge and Mopa International Airport project have also seen progress.
Four- and six-laning of highways is also almost achieved. But supply of material and experts from outside the region hit the work of the new Zuari bridge, which could not even see the completion of even a single lane yet.
The superspecialty block at Goa Medical College and Hospital was inaugurated with facilities available for cancer treatment in the state for the first time, which was a major promise fulfilled from the party’s 2017 manifesto. The state was also able to keep its assurance in getting the Center to amend the environmental regulations to provide relief to those residing near CRZ areas.
While door-to-door garbage collection system is now in place in most parts of the state, the new garbage treatment plant at Bainguinim, among others, and work of bringing new areas under sewerage treatment networks, has not taken off as expected.
“Regional Plan 2021 to be completed within one year, taking into consideration all views so that the environment/agricultural land is protected. Take necessary steps to include the Dhangar community in the ST category,” said the 2017 manifesto, reminding of promises unfulfilled.
