Private and public sector banks across the country will stay closed For more than half of the coming month, that is, November. Out of 30 days in the second last month of the year, banks will remain closed for 17 days on weekends as well as the ongoing festivities across India. On that note, you should also note that it should not be a matter of concern that holidays are state wise and only a few branches of banks in the respective states will remain closed on these days. They are usually not uniform in nature, except for a few days. For example, banks will remain closed in Bengaluru on Kannada Rajyotsava, but services will remain available in other parts of the country.
According to an official list released by the Reserve Bank of India or RBI, the number of holidays has been fixed at 11. The rest are weekend holidays. This includes all Sundays of the month as well as the second and fourth Saturdays. The list of RBI holidays falls into three categories. These are state wise celebrations, religious holidays and festival celebrations.
The central bank’s notification for holidays has been notified under three brackets namely ‘Holiday under Negotiable Instruments Act’, ‘Holiday under Negotiable Instruments Act’ and ‘Real Time Gross Settlement Holiday’ and ‘Closing of Accounts of Banks’ ‘ Are included. On these notified holidays, all branches of banks, including public sector, private sector, foreign banks, co-operative banks and regional banks, will remain closed.
According to this RBI list, no bank opens on Republic Day (January 26), Independence Day (August 15) and Gandhi Jayanti (October 2), Christmas Day (December 25). Branches are also closed during festivals like Diwali, Christmas, Eid, Guru Nanak Jayanti, Good Friday. RBI has made Sundays a compulsory holiday for all banks except the second and fourth Saturdays of every month.
As per the holiday list for the coming month, all banks across the country, except Bengaluru, will remain closed on Diwali, which falls on November 4. Further, only weekend holidays will be applicable equally to all banks. India on the same day.
