According to reserve Bank of India In the list, banks were given only 8 days off, however, lenders also had weekends to consider as part of the total number of holidays. This increased the number of holidays for banks to 15 days in the month of August. In the middle of the month, only 8 days are left out of the total list of 15 holidays. Three of those days are weekends, while the other five are RBI mandated holidays. The weekend holidays include two Sundays falling on 22 August and 29 August respectively. The third weekend holiday is the fourth Saturday of the month.
Holidays from RBI’s list for this month, lands under the classification of ‘Holidays under Negotiable Instruments Act’. Other classifications for RBI listing may also be ‘Holiday under Negotiable Instruments Act and Real Time Gross Settlement Holiday’ and ‘Banks’ Closing of Accounts’, but RBI has not indicated that these other two classifications apply to the current listing. It is to be noted that these holidays in RBI list are state wise holidays, religious festivals and festivals. They are state-based and are not uniform in any way as they do not apply on the same date in all states. Then the very next day on 21st August is Thiruvonam, which is celebrated in Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi. 22nd August is a Sunday and that means there is a common bank holiday for all the banks in India.
Finally, the Sree Narayana Guru Jayanti holidays will be celebrated in Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi on 23rd August. As these are mostly compiled in South India and only a few places at a time, it gives a decent amount of breathing space to the bank customers to plan their next trip to the bank.
The last day in the list of holidays falls on 31st August, which is Shri Krishna Ashtami. This holiday will be observed only in Hyderabad and only lenders in that city will remain closed for the holiday.
