Bank holiday today: Banks will be closed in these cities for 5 days from today

Bank Holiday Alert! If you are planning to go to the bank for some important work, then you will have to wait till Monday. According to the holiday calendar list of Reserve Bank of India (RBI), all private and public sector banks in India will remain closed for 5 consecutive days.

As per the RBI calendar, banks will remain closed from today i.e. Thursday (August 19) to next Monday (August 23) as August marks the beginning of the festive season. During this five-day period, banks in Kerala will remain closed for three days.

However, online banking activities will continue and ATM machines will dispense cash.

As per the RBI calendar, originally 15 holidays were allotted for the month of August 2021. This includes two Sundays and a fourth Saturday. The holidays issued by RBI for lenders across India have been divided according to state-wise celebrations.

Holidays from RBI’s list for this month, lands under the classification of ‘Holidays under Negotiable Instruments Act’. Other classifications for RBI listing could also be ‘Holiday under Negotiable Instruments Act and Real-time Gross Settlement Holiday’ and ‘Banks’ Closing of Accounts’.

There are only two holidays that will be celebrated by most states and cities. One is Muharram and the other Janmashtami.

Notably, banks were earlier closed in Maharashtra on Monday on the occasion of Navroz, commonly known as the Parsi New Year.

Aug 19: Muharram (Ashura), the first month of the Islamic calendar is celebrated in 17 cities. Lenders will have a holiday on this day in the cities of Agartala, Ahmedabad, Belapur, Bhopal, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi and Srinagar.

Aug 20: On the occasion of Onam, the annual harvest festival is celebrated in Kerala. Banks to remain closed in Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu on August 20 on account of Onam

21 August: Banks will remain closed only on the occasion of Thiruvonam in Kerala.

22 August: Apart from being a Sunday, when all banks are closed, the festival of Raksha Bandhan is also falling on 22nd August. All banks are closed on Sundays as well as on the second and last Saturdays.

23 August: Banks to remain closed again in Kerala on account of Sree Narayana Guru Jayanti.
