Bank Holiday in January: Lenders to remain closed for 16 days next month; dates here

Bank Holidays in January 2022: As we head towards the new year 2022, a whole new set of holidays has begun for the masses, and the banking sector is no exception. In this regard, you must note that in the coming month i.e. January 2022 all the private and public sector banks will remain closed for several days. The first month of the new year has many holidays for the banking sector, 16 to be exact. This means that in January 2022, banks across India will be closed for 16 days. The Reserve Bank of India released the holiday calendar earlier this month.

On that note, you should note that this should not be of much concern as these bank holidays are largely state-wise. This means that they are usually not uniform in nature. For example, January 12 will be a bank holiday in Kolkata to mark the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda in the state, but services will remain available in other parts of the country.

Bank holidays are effective as per the list issued by Reserve Bank of India or RBI. According to a list of the central bank, the number of holidays this month has been fixed at 11. The rest are weekend leaves. This includes all Sundays of the month as well as the second and fourth Saturdays. Banks are open on the first and third Saturdays of every month. The RBI holidays list falls into three categories. These are state wise celebrations, religious holidays and festival celebrations.

The central bank’s notification for holidays has been notified under three brackets namely ‘Holiday under Negotiable Instruments Act’, ‘Holiday under Negotiable Instruments Act’ and ‘Real Time Gross Settlement Holiday’ and ‘Banks’ Closing of Accounts. ‘ Are included. On these notified holidays, all branches of banks, including public sector, private sector, foreign banks, co-operative banks and regional banks, will remain closed.

There is no national holiday next month, but most banks will remain closed on 26 January on the occasion of Republic Day. Banks in Imphal, Jaipur, Srinagar, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh and Agartala will remain open on January 26, RBI has notified.
