According to this, all public and private sector banks across India will remain closed for 12 days in December, including weekend holidays. The RBI list mentions seven holidays, including Christmas, during the month of December. For example, Goa will observe a bank holiday on December 3 to mark the feast day of St. Francis Xavier in the state, but services will remain available in other parts of the country. Hence, bank customers are generally advised to visit the nearest branch to know about the complete list of bank holidays.

RBI has classified the December holidays as ‘holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act’. Other classifications for RBI listing are ‘Holiday under Negotiable Instruments Act’ and ‘Real Time Gross Settlement Holiday’ and ‘Banks’ Closing of Accounts’. Having said that, the other two classifications do not apply as per the mandate of leaves in this month.

Even if it was not on Christmas weekend, banks would have remained closed in every part of the country. These include- Guwahati, Hyderabad, Imphal, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kochi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Panaji, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi, Shillong, Shimla, Srinagar and Thiruvananthapuram.

Most of the bank holidays allotted this month as holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act are for Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya. In December, Shillong has four bank holidays apart from the weekend holidays.

Under the same act, the first holiday of the month falls on December 3, but according to the RBI list, this relaxation will be applicable only for banks in Panaji. Hence, it will serve you well as a bank-goer to keep these dates in mind as the month progresses.
