Hundreds of Hindus in Dhaka, Bangladesh raised slogans against attacks on temples and killing of two Hindu devotees in another district

Amid escalating communal violence in Bangladesh, a clash broke out between the police and the attackers at the Laxmi Narayan Akhara Temple in Hajiganj Upazila of Chandpur on Tuesday. The death toll in the clash was put at five after one injured person died during treatment. Commenting on the incident, Mohammad Harunur Rashid, officer-in-charge of Hajiganj police station, said that the victim was shifted from Comilla Medical Hospital to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for better treatment, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Earlier, several reports said that some people were killed in communal violence during Durga Puja celebrations in Hajiganj Upazila of Chandpur, while 60 others including journalists, police and common people were injured.

This comes after alleged reports of desecration of the Holy Quran at a Durga Puja site on the banks of Nanuar Dighi on social media.

Several places of worship were vandalized in Chandpur, Chittagong, Ghazipur, Bandarban, Chapainwabganj and Maulvibazar, Dhaka Tribune reported.

Meanwhile, the attacks that started in Kamila during Durga Puja have spread to other parts of the country and there are reports of violence, arson and murder from many areas and cities.

At least 71 cases have been registered in different parts of the country in relation to attacks on Hindus and around 450 have been arrested for spreading rumors on social media.
