Bangladesh’s security agencies on Saturday arrested 30-year-old Shaikat Mandal. The man arrested is believed to be the second prime suspect behind violence against Hindus in Bangladesh and mob attacks on temples during Durga Puja celebrations. The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Bangladesh said the second prime suspect incited people and incited violence while doing it live on Facebook.

RAB officials said one of the masterminds of the October 17 violence in Peerganj sub-district of northwest Rangpur, and his accomplice were arrested on Saturday from Ghazipur on the outskirts of Dhaka. At least 70 houses and shops belonging to Hindus were torched in the communal violence in Peerganj following Mandal’s Facebook post on October 17.

Shaikat’s arrest comes a day after 35-year-old Iqbal Hussain and nine other students were detained. Iqbal had created a wave of blasphemy by placing the book of Quran Sharif at the place of Durga Puja. He has been put on police remand for seven days as other security agencies will also interrogate him.
