The entire post-lunch session was washed out by rain, but the duo raised their scoring rates, hitting nine fours by de Silva before Shakib Al Hasan got his wicket.

The right-handed batsman faced 95 balls, which was initially given not out on a catch-back appeal, before successfully reviewing Bangladesh.

Mathews, who hit four fours and a six, was batting at the stumps after scoring 10 runs with Dinesh Chandimal.

Bangladesh got off to an early start after Sri Lanka resumed at 143-2, with Abadot Hossain bowling nightwatchman Kasun Rajitha for a duck off the second ball of the day.

“I thought Abadot was fantastic today. I thought he ran all day long. I asked him to ask for the ball after tea. He did that and created a problem,” said Bangladesh fast bowling coach Allan Donald.

The former South Africa great also praised the Sri Lankan pacers for the impact they made on the opening day by reducing Bangladesh to 24-5 in the first hour.

“I thought the Sri Lankan fast bowlers were amazing in their consistency and asking questions,” Donald said.

“He got the ball to swing. He knocked on the areas. I said your new ball is heavy on these wickets in Bangladesh.

“They exploited it really well.”

A delivery from Shakib dismissed Dimuth Karunaratne for 80 soon after Rajith departed, with the Sri Lankan skipper adding 10 to his overnight score.

Shakib tosses the ball over the off-stump and Karunantne goes for a drive, but the flight’s delivery dips and hits his stump after turning between bat and pad.

Karunaratne, dismissed for 37, hit nine fours in his 15th Test half-century.

De Silva hit Abadot for three boundaries in an over just before the break, when he and Mathews were saved by a difficult spell from the right-arm pacer and Shakib.

Shakib, the most successful bowler of all time for Bangladesh, has claimed 3-59.
