MS Dhoni continues to be ‘Captain Cool’ with his latest gesture for the Chennai Super Kings spinner resulting in praise from former players

How many times have you seen a captain either reprimanding or looking disappointed after a bowler has hit a boundary? It is natural to feel frustrated, especially in times of crisis or when there is a deviation from plan.

During the IPL 2023 clash between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians, MS Dhoni’s unusual gesture after one of his bowlers hit a boundary led commentators to praise his mindset.

Midway through the 16th over, CSK spinner Mahesh Thikshana was reverse-swept by MI batsman Tristan Stubbs at the wicket-keeper for a four.

Instead of scolding the bowler, Dhoni was seen praising him.

Sanjay Manjrekar, who was on-air during that phase, noticed Dhoni’s gesture and pointed out how Dhoni was praising his bowler for sticking to the plan despite the adverse result.

“MS (Dhoni) believes a lot in the process. And the ball that went for a four, he was just appreciating the bowler that he bowled a good ball. He was an offspinner – the process was right, the result was not,” Manjrekar said.

Pommi Mbwanga supported this and said that what Dhoni did is ‘intangible’ and important in keeping the players’ confidence up.

“There are things you called them intangible that a captain would do for a side. Instilling confidence in young players without scolding them at certain times, even if they bowl bad balls, knowing you need them for the rest of the game. MS Dhoni does it well,” Mbwanga said.

Tikshana finished with figures of 0/28 in four overs as MI posted a mediocre 139/8 at Chepauk.

During the toss, Dhoni praised his CSK teammates a lot.

“Good job by everyone, everyone can show some focus on the field, we have improved every game, there have been some slip ups, but we need to finish well,” he added.

It is being speculated that Dhoni might announce his IPL retirement as a player after the season gets over.
