Earlier this month, Uttarakhand Governor Baby Rani Maurya resigned two years before completing her term, amid speculation that she might be given some active role in politics.

A Raj Bhavan official said that he submitted his resignation to the President of India. He said that he had resigned due to personal reasons.

However, there is speculation in the media that his resignation will pave the way for him to take a more active role in politics. It is also being linked to his recent meeting with Amit Shah in Delhi on 5 September.

Sixty-five-year-old Maurya, who has been associated with the BJP for a long time, took oath as the governor of Uttarakhand on August 26, 2018 from Krishan Kant Paul at the end of his five-year term.
