Ayurveda suggests yoga for your body type

Ayurveda says that one’s mind-body system governs health. It is said that thoughts in the mind cause different reactions in the body. The two are inseparable and therefore in order to understand one’s health issues, it is important for individuals to understand their mind-body type.

Ayurveda explains this interrelationship through 3 operating agents called doshas. These doshas are Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Although these 3 doshas are present in all human bodies, the dominance of one or more describes a person’s mind-body type. Based on the dosha, Ayurveda suggests the most appropriate yoga practice for the individual:

vata dosha

People with Vata dosha have a slender stature and are often active, enthusiastic, imaginative and learners. Yin and stretching yoga are best suited for them. The slow-paced, low-impact yoga practice brings the necessary warmth and sense of comfort to those belonging to this body type or dosha.

Vrikshasana (Tree Pose), Tadasana (Mountain Pose), and yoga asanas such as Virabhadrasana I and Virabhadrasana 2 (Warrior One and Two Pose) are recommended for people with Vata dosha.

bile dosha

People with pitta dosha have a moderate build. They have strong digestion and a brisk appetite and thirst, however, they are also vulnerable to anger and irritability under stress.

Since these people enjoy high energy levels and are generally hot, they should avoid hot yoga, which results in excessive sweating.

Cooling and relaxing yogasanas are recommended for them. Exercises like Ustrasana (camel), Bhujangasana (cobra), Setu Bandha Sarvangasana (bridge) pose, Matsyasana (fish), Kapotasana (pigeon), and Vrikshasana (tree) will help them cool down.

Kapha Dosha

A person with a Kapha minded body type enjoys a strong and powerful erection, and they often gain kilos easily. While people with pitta dosha should not practice hot yoga, those with kapha dosha will benefit greatly from it. Shakti yoga, which refers to a vigorous approach to Vinyasa-style yoga, is also recommended. Hot yoga includes standing deep breathing (parayama), half moon pose (ardha-chandrasana) and awkward poses (utkatasana).

Meanwhile, Purna Mukha Svanasana (Boat Pose), Chaturanga Dandasana (Plank Pose) Salabhasana (Locust Pose), and Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward Dog Pose) are Shakti Yoga postures.
