The SDMA issued a ‘high danger’ avalanche warning for north Kashmir’s Kupwara district and a ‘medium danger’ warning for Bandipora, Baramulla, Doda, Ganderbal, Kishtwar, Poonch, Ramban and Reasi districts.

Avalanche warning has been issued for 12 districts of Jammu and Kashmir and the State Disaster Management Authority has appealed people to avoid avalanche-prone areas. This comes after an avalanche hit a village in Gurez sector of Bandipora district and Sarbal area of ​​Ganderbal today. However, there was no loss of life or property.

“A low-intensity avalanche hit Sarbal area where the workshop of Hyderabad-based Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Limited (MEIL) was going on. As told by the company officials that all are safe. There is no information about loss of life or property. Police and SDRF are monitoring the situation,” said police.

The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) on Saturday issued a ‘high-danger’ avalanche warning for north Kashmir’s Kupwara district and a ‘medium-danger’ warning for Bandipora, Baramulla, Doda, Ganderbal, Kishtwar, Poonch, Ramban and Reasi districts. Issued. agency PTI Reported.

“Avalanches are very likely to occur in the next 24 hours in Kupwara district with high danger level above 2,000 metres. Avalanches above 2,000 meters are likely in Bandipora, Baramulla, Doda, Ganderbal, Kishtwar, Poonch, Ramban and Reasi districts in the next 24 hours.”

He said there is a possibility of avalanches above 2,000 meters in Anantnag, Kulgam and Rajouri districts in the next 24 hours. People have been advised to take precautions.

The development comes at a time when Kashmir is in the grip of Chillai Kalan, a 40-period which began on December 21 and ended on January 31, when the Valley was facing its harshest winter.

Moderate to heavy snowfall lashed Kashmir on Friday, covering roads and buildings in white and leaving the valley cut off from the rest of the country. The snowfall also affected air and road traffic.

The Meteorological Office said that a fresh weak Western Disturbance is likely to affect Jammu and Kashmir from January 19 to 25. There is a possibility of light to moderate rain or snowfall between January 23 and 24.
