After losing the first Test by an innings and 132 runs inside three days in Nagpur, Australia lost the second Test to India by six wickets in New Delhi.

Former Australia captain Ian Chappell believes regular use of the sweep shot is not the only way to survive against spinners on pitches in India. He said that playing Test in sub-continental conditions requires a batsman to have good footwork and score runs through the gaps.

Sweeping regularly is not the answer to playing good spin bowling, and whoever says that is talking through his hat. The odd player is very good at sweeping and should use the shot, but there are better ways for most.”

“Any good spin bowler who gets the ball to bounce can consistently expose the dangers of sweeping. It should have been clear in the build-up to Australia what sort of batting strategies India needed to use. Most The advantage is to see the ball closer, more so than in Australia, and that’s a little more time than you think.”

“Once a batsman understands the extra time on slightly slower Indian pitches, he can work the ball into the gaps to score valuable runs. “Those runs, especially at the start of an innings, when survival is treacherous, can frustrate even the best spinners,” Chappell wrote in his column for ESPN Cricinfo on Sunday.

After losing the First Test by an innings and 132 runs within three days at Nagpur, Australia lost the Second Test India by six wickets in New Delhi, which meant that their chances of winning the Test series were over as India retained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Now trailing 2-0, Australia will now take on India in the third Test starting March 1 at the Holkar Stadium in Indore. Chappell also cited the example of Indian captain and opener Rohit Sharma’s batting in the first two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar stand. The trophy is a lesson for the Australian batsmen.

“A successful player needs to work out quickly how to survive the first ten minutes on a typical Indian pitch that encourages spin, and hope he has his share of luck. If he plays intelligently, as Rohit As Sharma has shown during the series, it is not impossible to bat on testing Indian pitches.”

Chappell signed off by saying that Australia made mistakes in selection strategies on the tour of India. “The selectors can be fooled into thinking that playing spin bowling well in Australia means success will automatically follow on Indian pitches. Not so, but if the method is good in Australia, the selectors should recognize that it can lead to success in India.”

“Australia’s selection on this tour has been dreadfully inconsistent and at times irrational. Getting the selection right creates an atmosphere of calm, which can effectively put a stop to dressing room tantrums as well as help in team spirit.”

“The Australian cricket team is very good in many places in the cricketing world but the trip to India should have raised alarm bells a long time ago.”
