AUS vs ENG, Ashes 2021-22, 2nd Test in Adelaide, Day 3 Highlights: Australia take a 282-run lead at stumps

AUS vs ENG, Ashes 2021-22, 2nd Test in Adelaide, Day 3: Highlights: Mitchell Starc’s milestone in day-night Tests has handed Australia in command of the second Ashes Test, with the home team taking nine wickets to lead 282 runs on the third day.

England were all out for 236 from 150-2 in reply to a total of 473-9 declared in Australia’s first innings.

Australia captain Steve Smith on Saturday decided against enforcing a follow-on before the home team went 45-1 at the stumps, with David Warner running out after a mid-wicket mix-up.

Under-pressure opener Marcus Harris both finished the crucial 17 overs with nightwatchman Michael Neser (2) to remain unbeaten on 21 under lights.

Australia remained unbeaten in eight Tests played with the pink ball, partly due to game management and partly due to skill. A large part of that day-to-night experience can be attributed to Stark.

No bowler enjoys using the pink ball as much as the left-armer, who claimed 4-37 in the first innings at the Adelaide Oval. His record now stands at 50 wickets – 18 ahead of next best Josh Hazlewood – at an average of 18.10 in day-night Tests.

Cameron Green was also impressive for Australia with a 2-24 on Saturday, claiming the crucial wicket of Joe Root and ending a 138-run stand between the England captain and David Malan.

Green beat Root twice in the over to take a 62-run lead before Starc caught Malan at slips for 80 after six overs.

After claiming the wicket of Rory Burns under the lights on Friday night, Starc dismissed Jos Buttler for naught as part of an 18-over span of 4-19 for England.

It continued a poor game for wicketkeeper Butler, who twice dropped century-maker Marnus Labuschagne, including 21 runs before making 103.

Australia’s Nathan Lyon was also a big influence, scoring 3-58 runs on the pitch, where England opted to play a specialist spinner.

Australia will now try to bat until the twilight session on Sunday before leaving England with the best part of four seasons to save the match.

England’s defeat in Adelaide will leave the visiting team 2-0 down in the series and will need to win the remaining three Tests to regain the Ashes.
