AURANGABAD: A 35-year-old man ended his life by setting himself ablaze on Tuesday night after he attacked his seven-year-old son and 55-year-old mother-in-law with a sharp-edged weapon at Hanumantwadi of Latur town – around 265-km from here. The mother-in-law died.
According to police, the man was upset due to his wife’s refusal to return home and stay with him. “He was of the view that his mother-in-law was influencing his wife. In the attack, the man’s son (Kartik) sustained grievous injuries and is battling for life at a private hospital,” the officer said.
“The attacker has been identified as Rajnikant Vedpathak while the deceased woman has been identified as Chandrasena Vedpathak. The attack was so brutal that the sickle used by Rajnikant got stuck in the woman’s head and broke,” the officer added.
Superintendent of police Nikhil Pingale said, “We have registered a case at Gandhi Chowk police station and the matter is being probed to ascertain what exactly forced the man to commit the crime and later end his life.”
Citing version of the local residents, who were amongst the first to reach the spot, inspector Premprakash Makode said, “The man was reportedly carrying a sickle and soon after reaching Chandrasen’s home, he attacked his son. When the mother-in-law intervened, she was attacked too.”
He added, “Rajnikant later set the bed on fire and jumped into it. The man had even kept the gas stove on while committing suicide. But the timely action by the neighbours prevented any further incident in the house.”
Rajnikant worked with a private company in Pune, but had lost his job during the Covid-19 pandemic following which, he returned to his home town in Udgir.
