India on Tuesday said it was “disturbed” by recent decisions involving Myanmar’s deposed leader Aung San Suu Kyi and others, adding that the rule of law and democratic process must be upheld.

Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said, “We are disturbed by the recent decisions. As a neighboring democracy, India has been consistently supportive of democratic transformation in Myanmar.”

“We believe that the rule of law and the democratic process should be upheld. Any development that undermines these processes and widens differences is a matter of deep concern,” he said.

Bagchi was responding to a question from the media about the proceedings against Aung San Suu Kyi and others in Myanmar.

“It is our sincere hope that keeping in mind the future of our country, efforts will be made from all sides to advance the path of dialogue,” he said.
