Prayagraj: Although around a week is left for the festival of Raksha Bandhan, but the former garden in-charge of Allahabad University, Prof NB Singh of the department of Botany, and his students celebrated the festival on Saturday in a unique way. Giving the message of protecting the environment, a number of people led by Prof Singh tied rakhi to number of trees and promised to protect them. Apart from the teaching faculty member from AU, his students and gardeners employed at AU participated at the event.
“The idea of tying rakhi to trees, and that too a week earlier, was important because although we plant several trees on different occasions, but it is more important to protect them and see to it that they grow properly,” said Prof Singh
For the purpose, the professor selected both old and new trees at the teacher’s colony of AU which needed immediate attention. He also performed ‘aarti’ of some trees and applied ‘tilak’ before tying rakhi to the trunk of the tree. “The problem of global warming and carbon dioxide being released in the air is adversely affecting the environment because of which problems such as flood and temperature escalation are being witnessed in the present world,” said Prof Singh. There has to be a balance between progress and protecting environment and what better could be the method than to tie rakhi to these trees and promising them protection, he added.
Likewise, the traders of the city, under the banner of Sanyukt Vayapar Mandal Mahanagar, have decided to tie rakhi to the several trees of the city, this Raksha bandhan. The traders would first decorate the tree in front of their establishments and later, tie rakhi to the tree and take a pledge of protetcing them and the environment.
Likewise, the bakers and sweet shop owners too are in an upbeat mood to celebrate the festival.
“We have decided to make several items with the theme of Raksha Bandhan, including gift hampers, pastry and other items,” said Mohit Roy, owner of a famous bakery of Civil Lines area.
