The application will be presented in the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate on Saturday

Gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed, who is currently in police custody in connection with the Umesh Pal murder case, has sought permission from a magistrate to attend the last rites of his son Asad, who was killed in a police encounter.

Ahmed’s lawyer Manish Khanna told PTI that since Friday was a holiday on account of Ambedkar Jayanti, the request has been sent to the remand magistrate. He told that the application will be presented in the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate on Saturday.

Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were interrogated by the police at Dhumanganj police station on Friday. In the evening, both were taken for routine medical check-up.

Asad and his accomplice Ghulam, wanted in the Umesh Pal murder case, were killed in an encounter by the Uttar Pradesh Police near Jhansi on Thursday.

The alleged encounter apparently took place when Ahmed was in a court in Prayagraj, where he was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate in connection with the same murder and sent to 14-day judicial custody. The court also granted five-day remand to the UP police for questioning him.

The relatives of Ahmed and Ghulam reached Jhansi on Friday evening to collect the dead bodies. The bodies will be brought by road and are expected to reach Prayagraj on Saturday. On Friday evening, a large number of people gathered in Kasari Masari, the locality of Atiq Ahmed, following the rumor that Asad’s body would be brought to Prayagraj. However, due to the dead body not being handed over to the relatives till late Friday evening, it is expected that the last rites will be performed on Saturday.

A police officer said additional force would be deployed during Asad’s funeral to ensure that no untoward incident takes place.
