For the main event after a strong season, Kamalpreet Kaur peaked at just the right time as the discus thrower covered exactly 64.00m to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics women’s discus throw final on Saturday. Another Indian, Seema Punia, could not qualify for the final and finished 16th with a throw of 60.57m.

The medal tally will now be higher than that of the Indian national record holder (at 66.59m in June 2021) as Kamalpreet was the second discus thrower to qualify directly for the final – second in Group B and behind Valerie Allman (66.42) of the United States.
