Gurgaon: Scores of Anganwadis staff They staged a dharna outside the Mini Secretariat on Monday demanding immediate release of their pending salaries and regularization of their services. They also demanded that they be classified as government employees as they were doing the same work as full-time employees.
under the banner of Anganwadi Workers and Helpers Union, Haryana, The workers claimed that they have not received wages for the last six months. “We come from poor families, and we have been without pay for the last six months. How will we survive?” Union secretary Saraswati Panchal said.
The protesting workers also demanded that their minimum wage be raised to Rs 24,000, along with retirement benefits.
The workers said they had worked on the front lines during the first and second waves of the pandemic – from surveying patients to helping pregnant women who had contracted Covid, providing medicines and rations to people in isolation. Were, “We have been on our toes for the past two years”.
“Therefore, we deserve a hike in pay. We are working hard during the pandemic and some of us have got coronavirus, still we kept working. We want us to be recognized as government employees. When we put in so much effort, why not?” said Panchal.
The workers resolved to intensify the agitation if the demands were not met. Union president Sharda Devi said, “We will leave our work and sit outside the mini secretariat until our demands are met, only then the government will realize the value of our work.”
When contacted, District Program Officer (Women and Child Development) Sunaina Khatri confirmed the delay in release of salaries to Anganwadi workers and helpers and assured that honorarium would be released in the next few days.
“Yes, the workers have not received the remuneration of their centers due to the release of the budget. We will be able to provide them only when the government releases the budget. We are aware of their difficulties and are trying to help them as soon as possible.”
