At G20’s First Meet on Climate in Bengaluru, Blue Economy, Land Degradation Key Focus Areas

Policymakers from G20 countries will meet in Bangalore on February 9-11 to deliberate on key issues related to environment and climate sustainability and to consider adopting an integrated approach to fight climate change.

Land degradation, blue economy and resource efficiency are key focus areas as representatives from G20 countries gather in Bengaluru for the first working group meeting on the environment this Thursday.

The crucial three-day meeting will see intense discussions among policy makers on environmental concerns that affect the world at large. This will be the first of four meetings to be held under the chairmanship of India which will specifically focus on the environment and climate sustainability.

Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupendra said that as the temperature rises across the world, India’s G20 presidency will bring nations together to adopt an integrated, comprehensive and consensus-driven approach that will help them combat climate change. The meeting will also be attended by representatives of international organizations working in relevant fields. In terms of prioritization, the first working group will focus specifically on halting land degradation, promoting a sustainable and climate-resilient blue economy, as well as encouraging resource efficiency and a circular economy. Marine litter will also be given priority.

Policymakers will also share potential solutions and look at joint studies for effective restoration of land, especially abandoned coal mines destroyed by wildfires, and enriching biodiversity in critical areas.

“India is among the few countries that have already presented their decarbonisation plan to achieve net zero by 2070. From Green Bonds to the Green Credit program in the last budget, we’re working toward our climate goals. In G20 we will also promote LiFE- lifestyle For the environment,” Yadav said before the meeting detailing India’s commitment to climate action.

There will also be a side event where attendees will be taken around the city to see ecosystem restoration and biodiversity enhancement practices in Bengaluru. Subsequent meetings will be held in Gandhinagar, Mumbai and Chennai.

Speaking on the issue of climate finance, which has proved to be a major roadblock to climate action, Leena Nandan, Environment Secretary, said that the G20 will also have a dedicated working group for finance. “There needs to be a deeper resolve among nations to discuss the issue of climate finance, especially identifying the areas where it is most needed,” he said.

According to officials, the focus areas of the first meeting were carried over from previous presidencies, while others were identified based on their impact across countries.
