Assembly polls: At least one polling station in each constituency to be managed by women, says EC

In the five states for which elections were announced on Saturday, each assembly constituency will have at least one polling booth exclusively managed by women. The Election Commission said that in line with its firm commitment to gender equality and more constructive participation of women in the electoral process, it has directed that, as far as possible, at least one vote in each assembly exclusively managed by women center will be established. Constituencies in Goa, Manipur, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh.

All election personnel including police and security personnel at such polling stations will be women. Citing the arrangement of the counting day on March 10, the commission said that before receiving the results from the control units, the seals are verified, and the unique serial numbers of these are matched by the candidates to the counting agents deputed before them.

The EVMs and paper trail machines are kept back in the strong room in the presence of candidates or their representatives till the election petition period of 45 days is over. In this period, petitions challenging the results can be filed in the respective High Courts.

Following the practice that began during the Bihar Assembly elections, the Election Commission (EC) said senior citizens above 80 years of age and those infected with COVID would be given the option to vote from the comfort of their homes. It said polling personnel would visit the homes of those opting for this option and provide them with ballot papers to cast their votes. Contesting candidates and their agents will be informed and strict confidentiality will be ensured through videography of such voters, the Election Commission said. It said thermal screening of voters would be done at the entry point of polling stations by polling personnel or paramedical staff or ASHA workers. In the first reading, if the voter’s temperature is above the standards set by the Ministry of Health, then it will be checked twice. If this remains the case, the voter will be provided with a token and asked to come to vote in the last hour of polling, the Election Commission said. In the last hour of polling, such voters will be given the facility to cast their votes strictly following the preventive measures related to COVID, it said.
