The security forces guarding VVIPs had already faced a tough time during the West Bengal election, where BJP leaders were attacked by mobs.
According to sources, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) will set up several dedicated control rooms in all polling states Headed by a senior level officer who will oversee the movement and security of the guards and will be attached to the concerned agencies round the clock. The officer will also be responsible for liaising with the local police. These control rooms will be linked to the central control room.
The sources also claimed that these units would have adequate access to additional security troops who are already stationed in these states in case of need for additional security cover.
Officials claimed that there were attacks on various BJP leaders in West Bengal last year and there have been changes in the standard operating procedures since then.
The biggest burden of security of VVIP is on CRPF. Home Minister Amit Shah, top opposition leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi etc all have CRPF cover with Advanced Security Liaison (ASL).
“Following the recent security breach in PM’s security, during the upcoming elections, we will make additional arrangements for the security of our security personnel. Many of them have advanced security liaison (ASL), which requires advance security checks. We will set up control rooms, centers etc with additional units of the unit so that we do not face any problem in the security of VVIPs in any situation. Everything will be handled by a senior-level officer,” a senior CRPF official aware of the arrangement told News18.
The forces will have unit offices in all major cities of the polled states.
“Teams will be deployed in cities like Jalandhar, Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Lucknow, Imphal, Kanpur so that they can reach at short notice. The process of deploying personnel of additional units with backup plans has already been initiated in the five election states.
Similarly, the Special Security Group of CISF has also arranged for additional personnel to provide foolproof security.
The SSG will have a control room at Greater Noida to coordinate with the local police in all states. In case of any additional requirement of personnel, the units of SSG will be in major cities.
The NSG, which has a very limited number of security personnel like UP CM Yogi Adityanath and Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, will also have a senior officer to oversee the requirements of VVIPs during elections.
The three paramilitary CRPF, CISF and NSG provide security to almost all the top political leaders of the country except Prime Minister Narendra Modi. They provide security to around 125 VVIPs.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has already given green signal for the movement of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) in the poll-bound states.
According to an official communication released on Wednesday, a total of 225 companies of various CAPFs will be sent to Uttar Pradesh in a phased manner till January 20. There are about 120 men in each company, which means 27,000 security personnel are going to UP.
These 225 CAPF companies are doing initial deployment to dominate the area and more will be deployed in the coming days.
