Assembly elections 2022: Election Commission will today call for increasing the ban on political rallies

The Election Commission of India (ECI) had banned political rallies, first till January 15 and then till January 22, while announcing the dates for the elections. The Election Commission will hold a meeting today to decide whether political rallies are banned or not. will be picked up or not.

After elections were held in five states – Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa and Manipur, the Election Commission banned the holding of political rallies amid the rising number of COVID-19 cases in the country.

Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra will take a decision after meeting various officials of Health and Election Commission.

“The Election Commission will today hold series of virtual meetings with CEC Sushil Chandra along with Union Health Secretary, Health Secretary, Chief Secretary and Chief Electoral Officers of five electoral states to conduct election rallies and roadshows,” ANI reported.

The Election Commission had allowed holding of rallies with a maximum of 300 persons or 50% of the total capacity of the hall.

While announcing the election dates, the Election Commission banned ‘nukkad sabhas’ (corner meetings) on public roads and squares and limited the number of people to five for door-to-door campaigning, including a candidate, in 16-point guidelines. Did it Publicity

This decision has been taken keeping in mind the increasing cases of Kovid-19 in the country. The 20 districts of Uttar Pradesh that went to polls in the first two phases have 43,979 active cases out of the total 95,866 active cases in UP. Thus, the ECI will be alert to the increasing number of cases daily.
