New Delhi: Out of 235 candidates contesting elections assembly by-election This year, at least 44 have announced criminal trial against himself, according to election rights Group Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).

Affidavits of 235 candidates for assembly by-elections were analyzed and it was found that 44 candidates (19 per cent) have declared criminal cases against themselves.
“Of these, 36 (15 percent) have declared serious criminal cases against himself,” the ADR said in a report.
It states that 77 or 33 per cent of the candidates are crorepatis and the average assets per candidate contesting in the assembly by-elections is Rs. 2.99 crores.
“There are 93 candidates who have declared liabilities. Of the 235 candidates, 18 are women,” the election rights body said.
For Lok Sabha by-election Taking place in Madhya Pradesh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Himachal Pradesh, the ADR analyzed the affidavits of 26 candidates and found that there are four candidates (15 per cent) who have declared criminal cases against themselves.
One of these candidates has serious criminal cases registered against him.
It also said that seven or 27 per cent candidates are crorepatis and the average asset per candidate in the Lok Sabha bypolls is Rs 4.97 crore.
“There are 11 candidates who have declared liabilities and out of 26 candidates, four are women,” the ADR said.
The states where assembly bypolls are being held include Assam, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Bihar, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Maharashtra, Mizoram, Nagaland and Telangana.
