Silchar: An ‘unknown’ disease has claimed a large number of lives pigs Sources said in the Cachar district of Barak Valley in the last few weeks.
Locals said carcasses of over a hundred pigs were found in Tikargram, Arunachal on the outskirts of Silchar city. The bodies are lying in the backyard of Krishi Vigyan Kendra and other areas along the railway track.
Rajnagar gram panchayat member Gopal Paul said on Friday that a large number of pig carcasses have been found in Arunachal, giving an unbearable smell, but no steps have been taken by the district administration to clean them.
Dr M Sarkar of Silchar Veterinary Hospital said on Saturday that pigs often suffer from swine flu but the cause of death in Arunachal is yet to be ascertained. He said that the veterinary department has started investigation.
