Assam: Subansiri Dam will be commissioned by August next year. Guwahati News – Times of India

Guwahati: National Hydroelectric Power Corporation ,NHPC) has announced that the 2,000 MW Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Project on the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border will be commissioned by August next year. It is the largest hydro power project under construction in the country with an annual power generation capacity of 7421.59 Million Units (MU).
All . defying protests resumed by various organizations including Assam Students union, to stop the construction of the mega dam along the seismically active inter-state-boundary area, NHPC officials said that all the eight units of the dam would be commissioned by August 2023.
NHPC CMD AK Singh assured the visitors Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy (2021-22) said on Tuesday that the major components of the project would be ready in due course so that two units (500 MW) of the project would be commissioned by August 2022 and the dam would be dedicated to the nation as per schedule.
parliamentary committee headed by Rajeev Ranjanvisited the project on Tuesday and subsequently NHPC in a statement on Wednesday said that the committee appreciated the work of the project team and the progress made so far.
Project Executive Director, Vipin GuptaThe Committee apprised the Committee about the smooth construction activities undertaken to complete the project despite the difficulties being faced by natural calamity like COVID-19 and its associated constraints and flash floods.
The project started a political storm and has been an issue in every election in the state since 2011. Opposition parties have surrounded the ruling government, citing the threat to life and property in low-lying areas of Assam from the dam. Construction came to a halt in 2011 after massive protests. According to NHPC sources, due to the prolonged delay, the cost of the project increased to around Rs 20,000 crore from the earlier estimate of Rs 6,900 crore.
Work on the project resumed on October 15, 2019, following the recommendations of the National Green Tribunal. NHPC stated that the major corrective measures, as pointed out by NGT, have already been initiated to address the concerns about river bank erosion in downstream areas.
This project is the first waterfall dam on Subansiri. According to NHPC, it is primarily meant for hydro power with flood cushion and is designed for moderate flooding with integrated operation of the proposed middle and upper projects.
