Assam: Sputnik v Preferred jab for short intervals between doses. Guwahati News – Times of India

Guwahati: satellite v vaccine, Produced by Russia, has already become a popular shot among the beneficiaries in Assam due to its ready availability and the short duration between two shots.
Narayan Hospital started in Guwahati Sputnik V Vaccination campaign on 30 June as the first Sputnik V vaccination center in the area. After vaccinating more than 700 people with the first dose, the hospital administration is now preparing to give the second dose. Ajit Kumar Belmakonda, director of the hospital, told TOI, “Most of the beneficiaries are happy with Sputnik V as they are getting fully immunized within a very short span of time. We are going to start our second dose from July 20 itself.” Thursday.
Belmakonda said that in collaboration with her team, Sputnik is closely maintaining and monitoring V’s storage and cold supply chain Dr Reddy’s Laboratories and Indigo Airlines. “We are equipped with three high-end refrigerators that are capable of maintaining a temperature of (-) 25 °C, the temperature required to keep vaccines safe,” he said.
Earlier, when Dr Reddy’s had established liaison with some private hospitals in Assam, logistics concerns in the Northeast were worrisome. The temperature required in the cold chain to store Sputnik V is much lower than the requirements for Covaxin and Covishield, which are typically stored at 2 to 4 °C. Sputnik V needs to be stored between -20 and -25 °C.
Sputnik V approved for use in India by DGCI April 13 via Dr Reddy’s Laboratory. “Sputnik V is one of three vaccines in the world with an efficacy of over 90%. Sputnik V vaccine efficacy has been reported to be 91.6%. Sputnik V is the world’s first based on a well-studied human adenoviral vector-based platform.” There is a registered vaccine. And already registered in more than 65 countries,” claimed Belmakonda.
Among those who have received the Sputnik V vaccine here are employees of some industrial units, who could not find time to queue up at government hospitals for vaccination. Santosh Dwivedi, who works in a pharma company in Kukurmara near Guwahati, said, “We have a busy work schedule. So our company arranged jabs, for which the hospital had informed us in advance.”
The Health Department is continuously monitoring how the Sputnik V vaccine is being administered at Narayana Hospitals established in North Guwahati on Public-Private Partnership mode. “Perhaps because of the lower price, Sputnik V is being preferred by some hospitals. Since there is a heavy rush for Covaxin and Covishield, it may be easier to obtain new vaccines,” said immunization spokesperson and director of health services (Family Welfare ), Assam, Munindra Nath Ngate, said.
Even though around 70.65 lakh people have got their first jab in Assam so far, it is not certain when they will get the second shot. After increasing the interval between two shots of Kovishield, widely available in the country, to 12-16 weeks, the pace of vaccination has slowed in the state. Short supply of vaccines is also responsible for this slowdown. But the imminent danger is a possible third wave. Researchers have already found that patients who got both jabs have a lower infection severity.
