GUWAHATI: The Assam government on Sunday alleged that Mizoram authorities entered its territory in Hailakandi and started building a new bridge between the two northeastern states.
Hailakandi Superintendent of Police Gaurav Upadhyay said that the incident took place on Friday when some laborers of Mizoram were trying to build a bridge at Kachurthal under Ramnathpur police station area.
“The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ramanathapur police station and his patrol team immediately reached the spot and stopped the construction work citing trespass by Mizoram as they had no authority to build the bridge on the Assam side,” he said. .
Upadhyay alleged that around 40-50 security personnel from Mizoram reached the bridge site on Saturday and some of them entered towards Assam in complete violation of the joint statement issued by both the states on August 5 to maintain peace in the border area. did.
He alleged that the local police team of Assam urged the Mizoram security personnel to leave the Assam land, but they refused to do so.
Upadhyay said, “In order to emphasize the situation in Assam and to ask the Mizoram forces to withdraw from the Assam side of the bridge, a party of about 200 Assam Police personnel led by me and commandos and other senior officers reached Kachurthal on Sunday morning. ” .
However, he said that being a responsible force, the Assam Police did not cope and gave an opportunity to the concerned civil administration to resolve the matter amicably by stopping the construction on the unauthorized bridge and diverting the Mizoram force.
“Any allegation of theft by a disciplined force like the Assam Police is completely fabricated, baseless, malicious and devoid of any facts and is an attempt by the Mizoram administration to divert attention from the main issue, which is by the Mizoram authorities on the soil of Assam.” But it is illegal construction, Upadhyay said.
The Mizoram government said it has registered a case against Assam Police personnel for allegedly “stealing” construction material from the bridge site, which it claimed was in its territory.
Mizoram’s Kolasib Deputy Commissioner H Lalthalangaliana told PTI that Assam Police personnel entered the state’s territory at Zofai near Bairabi town and stole some construction material, including iron rods, from the bridge construction site on Friday.
