Guwahati: Assam Rifles jawan Suman Swargiyariwho was killed in an ambush Manipur On Saturday, the last rites were performed with full military honors at his native place in Assam’s Baksa district on Monday in the presence of hundreds of people.
The jawan was given a 21-gun salute at the funeral of the Health Minister. Keshab Mahanta and Minister of Handlooms and Textiles Urkhao Gavra Brahmawho represented the state government.
Paying tribute to the jawan, Mahant said that the state government has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh to his family. He said, ‘It is a matter of great sadness that we have lost a brave soldier in the recent ambush attack in Manipur. He will be missed,” he said.
Out of the city, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will visit Suman’s house on Wednesday.
Seven people, including Rifleman Swargiari of 46 Assam Rifles, including the wife and minor son of the commanding officer of the unit, were killed in an ambush in Manipur’s Churachandpur district on Saturday.
Swargiari’s body was brought from Jorhat airport to the popular Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) airport in Guwahati’s Borjhar on Monday morning, from where it was taken by a military convoy to his native village in Barama, about 100 km from Guwahati.
Health Minister Keshab Mahanta, along with Assam Rifles personnel and officials of Kamrup (Metro) district administration, paid tribute to the late Swargiyari during the wreath laying ceremony at the LGBI airport.
Suman, who joined the Assam Rifles nearly a decade ago, is survived by wife Juri and a two-year-old son. He was due to come home in December to celebrate his son’s third birthday; But he fell victim to the bullets of the militants.

Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) chief Pramod Boro strongly condemned the barbaric attack and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah to rein in the militants strictly.
