Assam Portal For People To Suggest New Names Of Places On May 10 | Guwahati News – Times of India

Guwahati: Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the state government will launch a web portal on May 10 where citizens, who are no comfortable with the present name of the place they live, in can suggest new names for their towns or villages. Sarma, while doing the bhumi pujan for the second medical college at Kalapahar and MMC campuses in the city here on Monday, announced that hospital will be called Pragjyotishpur Medical College and not Kalapahar, who had destroyed the temple of Goddess Kamakhya, “I don’t see any reason why we should remember Kalaphar who destroyed the Kamakhya temple. RThis is a fit case to rename the hospital as Pragjyotishpur (assam’s ancient name),” he said. He added, “There are many places in Assam whose names people do not feel comfortable in uttering. Some names of places are seen as derogatory to some communities while some names are in contrast to our civilization. In Guwahati alone, people have changed many such names of their localities.” tnn
