Although it refrained from calling for a boycott this time, the organization asked the public to protest the Independence Day celebrations by wearing black badges and unfurling the ULFA’s “Rising Sun” flag.

We will ensure complete security so that citizens can celebrate Independence Day without any fear. Night-dominance exercises are being practiced in specific areas. He said that anti-sabotage checks are being done at all the entry and exit points of the city. “In addition to regular naka checking, intensive patrolling is being done on highways, roads, railway tracks, bridges and embankments,” he said.
Mishra said the security forces have been assigned the task of guarding important installations in the district including oil and gas pipelines, power houses, transmission towers, major bridges, railway stations, airports, markets and public places. Security has been tightened at Dibrugarh airport, Bogibeel bridge, Dibrugarh railway station, radio stations, Doordarshan Kendra, oil and gas terminals, transmission towers and industrial units, which could be potential targets for terrorists.
Assam Chief Secretary Jishnu Barua told TOI that gone are the days when militancy used to be the main concern during Independence Day celebrations. “Barring Covid, there is no such impediment in the Independence Day celebrations in Assam. Assemblies will be restricted in view of Covid, but there is no security concern of dangerous nature,” Barua said. Bodo-insurgency has been a cause of great concern in large parts of the state, but Barua said the state has got rid of it.
