Assam: Former student leader injured in police firing. Opposition targets BJP government

Guwahati: Opposition parties on Sunday hit out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Assam government after a former student leader was injured in police firing in Nagaon district.

Demanding immediate suspension of the police officials involved in the incident, Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi said the state was witnessing a “situation worse than the covert killings”.

“We demand that the Nagaon SP as well as all the police officers involved should be arrested for trying to kill an innocent youth,” he said, PTI reported.

All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) chief advisor Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya condemned the incident and demanded a judicial inquiry.

“The state government is creating an atmosphere of ‘open killings’. We give a stern warning to stop such barbaric acts,” Bhattacharya said.

“During his meetings with the SP and other police officers, does the Chief Minister instruct them to shoot innocent people?” He asked.

Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Ripun Bora also condemned the incident and slammed the BJP government in Assam.

“Police jungle raj in Assam. I strongly condemn the police firing on former GS Kirti Kamal Bora of Nagaon College. This is a clear result of CM @himantabiswa’s provocative statements regarding police firing. SP @nagaonpolice should be suspended as soon as possible! He tweeted.

Police claimed Kirti Kamal Bora, former general secretary of Nagaon College, was selling drugs and was shot in the leg after attacking law enforcers on Saturday.

However, the AASU alleged that it had opposed the thrashing of a youth by drunken policemen, which angered them.

Bora’s mother and some students later staged a sit-in in front of the Nagaon police station and demanded action against the policemen involved in the firing incident.

Instead of jamming the main gate, senior officials asked him to submit a memorandum in this regard.

After the controversy, the Assam Police said that the government has been requested to conduct a commissioner-level inquiry into the incident, if any lapse is found, the guilty personnel will be brought into action.

“The police personnel involved in the shooting incident in Kachlukhua, Nagaon have been sent to the Police Reserve with immediate effect. We have requested the government to conduct a commissioner-level inquiry into the incident. If any lapse is found, action will be taken against the erring personnel,” tweeted Assam Police.
