A day after supporters of Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh stormed a police station in Amritsar, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday drew a comparison between the hardline leader and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi.

Sarma shared on Twitter a video clip of Rahul Gandhi’s speech in the Lok Sabha, where he said “India has been described as a union of states, not a nation” and Amritpal Singh echoed the same commented.

The CM of Assam said that he speaks the language of Amritpal Rahul Gandhi and demanded that the Congress and its leaders should apologize for using “divisive language”.

“Look who speaks the language of Rahul Gandhi. Amritpal Singh, who brazenly attacked a police station in Amritsar, is following his words,” the Assam chief minister tweeted.

He also shared a video clip of Rahul Gandhi’s speech in Lok Sabha, in which he said that India has been described as a union of states and not a nation.

In an interview given to a TV channel, Amritpal Singh said, ‘India was not, was not India before 1947. It is a union of states. We should respect unions. We should respect the states. I do not agree with the definition of India.”

Hundreds of supporters of self-styled godman Amritpal Singh blocked the Jalandhar-Amritsar National Highway and laid siege to the Ajnala police station on Thursday. Supporters were seen breaking barricades put up by the police in Amritsar. Unaware of the law, the mob broke down the fence outside the police station, brandishing swords and sticks, demanding the release of Lovepreet Toofan, a close aide of their chief.

“The FIR was lodged only with a political motive. If they don’t cancel the case in an hour, then the administration will be responsible for whatever happens next… They think we can’t do anything, so this show of strength was necessary,” Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh ‘ the group said.

Hours after the heavy demonstration, police said the storm would be released on Friday.
