Assam asks citizens to avoid traveling to Mizoram, Congress says ‘Modi hai toh bhi mumkin hai’

Dispur: Days after violence broke out, the Assam government on Thursday issued an advisory to residents of the state asking them to avoid traveling to Mizoram amid a border dispute between the neighboring state.

The advisory issued by MS Manivannan, Commissioner and Secretary, Home and Political Department, said, “In view of the prevailing situation, the people of Assam are advised not to travel to Mizoram as there is no danger to the personal safety of the people of Assam.” Such a threat cannot be accepted.” .

The Assam government advised its citizens, who are residing in Mizoram for work-related reasons, to “take utmost care”.

The government said these advisories would come into force with immediate effect and would be publicized for wider public knowledge and compliance.

Apart from this, the Assam Police also issued a notification stating that all vehicles coming from Mizoram will be thoroughly checked at all entry points along the Assam-Mizoram border to keep an eye on the influx of illicit drugs.

Observing that smuggling of drugs through Mizoram is of great concern and danger to the society in general, the Assam Police said, “It felt necessary to check all vehicles entering Assam from Mizoram”.

“Such vehicles will be thoroughly checked by the Assam Police personnel at the point of entry at the Assam-Mizoram border,” the police said. He said that these vehicles would be released only after the satisfaction of an officer not below the rank of sub. Police Inspector, “that no illegal drugs are carried in vehicles”.

On Monday, the border dispute between the two states turned violent as five Assam Police personnel and a civilian were killed in a fierce encounter between the armies of the two states.

An injured policeman later succumbed to his injuries, taking the total number of policemen killed to six. At least 50 people were injured in the incident. A total of six companies of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) have been deployed at the place where the policemen were killed.

Congress’s response

As Assam issued a travel advisory to its people against travel to Mizoram, the Congress party called it a shameful day for the country.

Taking to Twitter, Congress general secretary and chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala referred to the travel advisory of the Assam government and questioned whether the chief minister and home minister should continue in their posts.

“Most shameful day in the history of the country! When the countrymen are unable to move from one province to another, do the Chief Minister and Home Minister have the right to continue in their posts? If Modi is there then it is possible!” He wrote in Hindi.
