Assam: 14 Dental College Students Expelled from Hostel for Ragging

14 students of Assam’s Silchar Dental College have been expelled from the hostel for six months for allegedly ragging junior students recently admitted to the institute. The principal of the college gave this information on Tuesday.

This is the fourth case of alleged ragging reported in the northeastern state in the last 10 days.

Principal Manjula Das told PTI that the affected juniors of the boys’ hostel directly lodged a complaint against the seniors on the University Grants Commission helpline and the email was forwarded to the headmaster, following which the anti-ragging squad of the college carried out the investigation. ,

“Investigation at the institutional level was completed and we have decided to evacuate the students from the hostel. They have not been suspended from academics and can continue attending classes”, he said.

He said that the college has taken this minimum step and further course of action will be decided after further investigation.

An incident came to light last month when a student of M.Com first semester of Dibrugarh University jumped from the second floor of his hostel on November 26 to save himself from ragging. Four senior university students were expelled for three years, 18 others were suspended and three hostel wardens were suspended for alleged dereliction of duty.

In another incident, two postgraduate students of the Assam Medical College Hospital, Dibrugarh, were suspended from attending classes for six months and expelled from the hostel for allegedly ragging juniors.

In the third case of ragging, a case was registered against nine people following a complaint filed by the Principal of Jagannath Baruah College, Jorhat.

On receiving a letter from a junior student alleging ragging by a senior student of the college, the principal lodged a complaint.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had recently said that the government would take stern action to eradicate the menace of ragging from the society.
