Ashes missed emotion, while India vs South Africa was thrilling: Ian Chappell

Ian Chappell credited the batsmen for playing some exceptional innings in tough conditions in South Africa, praising the top scorer but particularly impressed by Rishabh Pant and Keegan Pietersen.

In the recently concluded Ashes series, Australia registered a 4-0 win over England and it also marked the sixth defeat for the visitors in the World Test Championship 2021-22. The Ashes is one of the oldest rivalries and players from both the sides have always given their 100 per cent in making it a high voltage clash. Former Australian captain Ian Chappell felt that this time the Ashes missed the fight.

From the first Test till the last, Australia had complete dominance over the game. New captain Pat Cummins has started off with a coveted series win. But Chappell believes that the Test series between India and South Africa was more exciting than the Ashes.

He said that both India and South Africa had fought tooth and nail till the last delivery, which made the Test series a treat to watch. In the end, it was South Africa who registered a 2-1 series win over the Indian side.

In his column for ESPN Cricinfo, Chappell credited the batsmen for their exceptional innings in tough conditions in South Africa. He said that despite the South African pitches being completely fast bowler friendly, the hosts showed a lot of courage in chasing the score above 200.

“Around nine hours away, South Africa surprisingly beat India in an old-fashioned dogfight that included some thrilling cricket. It also contained substantial sentiment of the kind that has been notably missing from the Ashes contest which has so far been surprisingly controversial. Bowling dominated the South Africa series on pitches that might have favored the fielding side, but also had some excellent batting,” Chappell wrote.

Chappell also lauded the valiant efforts of the top run-getters in the South Africa-India series, which were Dean Elgar, Temba Bavuma, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli. The former Australian cricketers were particularly impressed with the attacking gameplay of Rishabh Pant and Keegan Pietersen.

“Since faulty batting was not prevalent, the brilliant innings of Dean Elgar, Temba Bavuma, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli stood out. Superb shot-making from Rishabh Pant and Keegan Pietersen proved that aggressive batting can be achieved even on test surfaces, keeping the scoring in mind. ” she added
