Ashes 2021-22: Steve Harmison believes Joe Root may resign if England lose Ashes

Former England fast bowler Steve Harmison has shared his opinion on the team’s precarious position on all fronts in the ongoing Ashes in Australia, with more doubts than ever about the visiting team’s captaincy, batting, bowling, strategy and overall approach. with 0-2 down. ,

According to him, if India are unable to turn things around in the remaining three matches of the series, he feels that the England captain is looking at a serious future in terms of captaincy. In a conversation with Daily Mail Sports, the 43-year-old admitted that if the current scenario continues, he would not be surprised if Joe Root himself steps down as captain.

He said, “If this continues then who will be looking in the mirror and saying ‘what’s the matter? I will go back to being a batsman and averaging 50 every year. But I want IPL on my CV too’ I want to be the best multi-format player in England.”

Harmison said that if England lose the series, there would be doubts about Joe Root as he is getting ready to throw himself in such a situation. He believes, “But if people think it’s as easy as changing them and [head coach] Chris Silverwood, they want their heads to tremble. We have a system problem in this country.”

Following the departure of Alastair Cook in 2017, Joe Root was made the captain of England. England have also lost the last ten of their eleven Test matches in Australia and have been below average in two matches in the ongoing Ashes. Furthermore, he claims that Durham’s Ben Stokes is the only possible replacement for Root in a worst-case scenario, and the Ashes head south from here. However, he believes it will burden Stokes with too many roles.

According to Harmison, Stokes may be capable of doing supernatural things as he has demonstrated in the past but it would be a mistake to think in that direction while choosing the captain.
