Ashes 2021-22: Jonny Bairstow prime example of England’s faulty team selection: David Lloyd

Jonny Bairstow goes back to the dressing room.

In his column for the Daily Mail, Lloyd reflected on Bairstow’s century and highlighted the fact that he always had potential but was not handled well.

According to former England cricketer David Lloyd, Jonny Bairstow’s century in Sydney has taught a lesson to the tourists in terms of selection. Lloyd also said that England lost a move by not taking Nathan Lyon off the offensive first. The Tourists were in serious trouble at 36-4, but Bairstow scored his seventh Test century to help England reach the end of the game 158 runs behind, with three wickets in hand.

In his column for the Daily Mail, Lloyd reflected on Bairstow’s century and highlighted the fact that he always had potential but was not handled well. Bairstow struggled for two seasons and brought England back into the game with assists from Ben Stokes and Mark Wood. Lloyd also emphasized that the team should have faced Lyon more aggressively from the Gabba Test.

He wrote, “We have said time and again that Jonny Bairstow has worked hard and he has again shown the folly of England’s selection at the SCG. He now has seven Test hundreds and it was scored in the toughest conditions.”

Lyon, in particular, was the most financially weak bowler in the first innings. Despite taking the crucial wicket of Ben Stokes, the off-spinner gave runs at the pace of 5.20. Lloyd said Australia should have gone for him from the start, just like Australia did with Jack Leach in Brisbane.

He remarked, “It took until the third day of the Fourth Test for England to find the right way to play Lyon on an indifferent pitch. He was dismissed for 71 in 12 overs without a maiden.

However, it looks like Bairstow is amongst England’s injury concerns for the fifth Ashes Test, apart from Stokes and Jos Buttler. All three were injured during the fourth Test in Sydney, with Stokes awaiting scan results on a side issue and Butler (left forefinger) and Bairstow (right thumb) all fearing X-rays would reveal a fracture. .
