Congratulatory messages poured in for new Australian Test captain Pat Cummins after England beat England by nine wickets in the Ashes Test on the fourth day at the Gabba on Saturday, even as former England captain Michael Vaughan lamented the fact that Joe Root’s team was losing too many matches to the “better teams”.
India cricketer Dinesh Karthik tweeted his appreciation for Cummins’ captaincy, saying that looking at his leadership skills no one would say that the fast bowler started his Test career as captain.
He said, ‘How was the start of his Test career as captain. Well done @patcummins30. There is a solid leader looking dost (heart with ribbon symbol) #ash,” Kartik said on social media.
Cummins’ demolition job in the first innings, where he took five wickets as the tourists scored 147 and set the stage for Australia’s victory, came in for praise from Australian legend Shane Warne, who wrote, “To @patcummins30 and Australian Congratulations. Team going 1-0 up in #ASHES – see you all in Adelaide. Should be another great Test match.”
Nathan Lyon, who was the hero on the fourth day of the Test on Saturday, accounted for the well-established David Malan (82) as he returned figures of 4/91 in the second innings and crossed the historic 400 Test wickets, notably received praise from earlier India Cricketer VVS Laxman, who said the Australian is a “fantastic bowler”.

Vaughan pointed to the shortcomings of the England team, saying, “The problem for England is that when they have a bad season they have Test losing sessions with the bat … it goes too long against better teams.” Happening from… #Ashes.”
