Former Afghanistan captain Asghar Afghan has criticized Australia’s Test captain Tim Paine for boycotting matches against the Afghanistan team in the Men’s T20 World Cup starting October 17 in the United Arab Emirates. Afghan’s post comes after Paine said on his morning breakfast show on San Hobart that the boycott of matches against Afghanistan at the mega event is “something that teams will discuss on the eve of that World Cup”.

“How such a team can be allowed to play in an ICC sanctioned tournament will be very difficult to see,” Paine said on Friday. Afghanistan has been in turmoil since the Taliban took over the country. Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) working president Azizullah Fazli told SBS Pashto that a decision on women’s cricket in the country would be taken soon, yet there is no clarity on the future of women’s cricket in the country.

“Mr. Penn! The Afghan National Cricket Team has the right to play not only in this World Cup but in all ICC organized tournaments/events as per ICC rules and regulations, and I am sure our brave National Heroes will do their best in this And will showcase his elite talent Inshallah,” the Afghan wrote in his Facebook post late Saturday.

The 33-year-old asked Penn not to make statements that would isolate Afghanistan cricket. “As a player and professional cricketer, you know that reaching this level of cricket requires a lot of hard work and dedication. For a less privileged cricketing nation as Afghanistan with zero infrastructure and support. Together where we are now and playing side by side. It takes determination, passion and talent to walk side by side with the top 10 countries. Therefore, you should avoid making aggressive statements, which result in Afghan Cr “Kate” will fall apart.

“Cricket is now the No. 1 sport in Afghanistan and there are around 30 million Afghans following it. This shows, either you are unaware of the circumstances or are talking paradoxically; in any case, you are playing Afghan cricket and all. We are mistreating the benefits. We have gained with difficulty over the past decade. (Sports should be separated from politics),” concluded the Afghan.

Afghanistan is part of the Afghanistan squad for the men’s T20 World Cup. They will start their campaign against a qualifier team from Round 1 on 25 October in Sharjah. Afghanistan are in Group 2 with two so far known qualifiers, 2007 champions India, 2009 champions Pakistan and New Zealand.
