Asaram Bapu Sentenced to Life Imprisonment in 10-year-old Rape Case

New Delhi: A local court in Gujarat’s Gandhinagar on Tuesday (January 31) sentenced self-styled godman Asaram to life imprisonment in a decade-old sexual assault case. Asaram is a ‘habitual criminal’, the prosecution told a sessions court today, seeking life imprisonment along with heavy fine for the self-styled godman in a rape case filed against him.

The Gandhinagar sessions court on Monday (January 30) convicted self-styled godman Asaram in a decade-old sexual assault case. Asaram was accused of repeated rape by a woman from Surat about 10 years ago at his ashram in Motera, Ahmedabad. However, due to lack of evidence, the court acquitted six other accused including Asaram’s wife.

As per the FIR lodged at Ahmedabad’s Chandkheda police station, Asaram Bapu allegedly raped the woman several times between 2001 and 2006 when she was staying at his ashram on the outskirts of the city.

Special Public Prosecutor RC Kodekar said, “The court has accepted the prosecution’s case and convicted Asaram for illegal detention under sections 376 2(c) (rape), 377 (unnatural offences) and other provisions of the Indian Penal Code.” blamed for.” monday.
